The history of Oakridge [The Secret City] and it's nuclear plants has always been very interesting to me. Over the years, I've heard many stories about how things were back in the cold war days. The old Airforce radar station at WR, on the north end with all the radar bases, towers, and buildings is a very interesting place to explore.

I was showing my neighbor this pic and telling him that I thought this was where the free-air radiation test took place. [if any of you know more about these towers, please share!] My neighbor then starting telling me about this place just miles from me here in Georgia called "Dawson Forrest" and it's secret underground facilities. I decided to start digging and see what I could find out... I did found some pics, but this article pretty much gives us an accurate picture of what really happen there. I've lived here 20+ years and never realized all this was practically in my backyard!

The K25 plants [off hwy 58 & 327] played a major part of Oakridge's cold war history. Here was where a major component of the A-bomb was developed. As you can see, these buildings are in the process of being demolished, but you can still see the major layout of the building. At one time, this was the largest building in the US. under one roof!
